English singer-songwriter & Grammy winner’s Ella Mai launched “sophomore season” as she readies her next album with a new single, “DFMU.”
“DMFU” is first single from Ella Mai’s sophomore album, still unnanounced. The song was announced via the singers social media on January 24, 2022 and is set to be released on January 28.
Following up the success of a song like “Boo’d Up” is a tough thing to do, but Ella Mai is doing just fine. The rising R&B star made sure her 2017 song that turned into a 2018 hit wasn’t the only thing fans had to tide them over, releasing a full-length self-titled album that same year. In fall of 2020, she returned with a new single, “Not Another Love Song,” but has mostly been quiet on the release front since then.
She hasn’t officially announced her sophomore album, but it seems Ella Mai has started the project’s rollout. The British songbird stunned on the charts with the releases of her hit singles “Boo’d Up” and “Trip”—tracks that aided in Ella Mai becoming a global superstar. She hasn’t been as visible in recent years, although she did give us “Not Another Love Song” and collaborations, but fans are ready for much more from the Grammy-winning singer.
Following her 2020 track “Not Another Love Song,” “DFMU” features a similar beat to her chart-topping “Boo’d Up.” “Don’t fuck me up, don’t let me down/You know I wanna be around/You tugging warring with my heart/Didn’t think it’d ever be so hard/Crazy I’m letting down my guard,” she sings in the first half of the chorus with her signature velvety vocals.
Tonight, she’s changed that by sharing a brand new song with fans, rather mysteriously titled “DFMU.” A cursory listen will help most fans figure out what Ella is singing about on this one, though, as she sings “Don’t f*ck me up / don’t let me down.” There’s a video for the song coming tomorrow morning, so tonight we just get the song, but it’s a bit more woozy and about the same mid-tempo pacing as “Not Another Love Song,” though neither are quite as percussive as her infamous “Boo’d Up.” Either way, the song is a great step forward for an R&B artist that fans have been craving new music from for a few years now. Hear the new track below and keep an eye out for the video tomorrow.
Ella’s New Music Friday addition came in the form of a new single titled, “DFMU,” or “Don’t F*ck Me Up,” and it’s a track where the singer pleads with her lover to not break her heart. It’s something that millions will be able to relate to, so we’ll just have to await the response from fans. Stream “DFMU” and let us know if you’re feeling this R&B jam.
This is Mai’s first as a main artist since October 2020, when Not Another Love Song was released. Ella Mai’s musical career began at London’s British and Irish Modern Music Institute in 2014, during which time she auditioned as part of a trio on the 11th season of The X Factor. In 2015, she uploaded a four-track solo EP of originals to SoundCloud titled Troubled, and was discovered on social media by American record producer Mustard and signed with his record label, 10 Summers Records.
In 2020, Mai received her third nomination for the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album for her self-titled debut at the 62nd Grammy Awards. On 2 October 2020, Mai released the single, “Not Another Love Song”.
