American rapper Coi Leray admits her trust issues are a result of her ‘Anxiety’ nn her new song.
Coi Leray had a breakout year in 2021. She landed her first successful record with “No More Parties,” a song that entered the top-40 section of the Billboard Hot 100. It was also remixed by Lil Durk after gaining viral attention on TikTok. She later released “Big Purr (Prrdd)” with Pooh Shiesty, which also made its way onto the Billboard singles chart, in addition to making an appearance in the 2021 XXL Freshman class. All of that points to signs that Coi could be in for a big year in 2022 as she’s due for another project.
The New Jersey makes her return with “Anxiety,” her first song of 2022. The track is a bright record that takes a step into the pop lane as Coi speaks about the nature of anxiety and how it affects her from day-to-day. “I still got anxiety, that’s why I keep it on me / Sometimes I feel like, can’t trust no one around me,” she sings on the new track. “There’s another side of me but I don’t even show it / ‘Cause I got way too many people eating off me.”
Coi’s new song arrives after she concluded 2021 with “Medicine,” another record that touched on the topic of anxiety. She spoke about her struggles in a statement that she shared with the song. “Kind of been a rough year, even though I made millions, it came with a lot of depression,” she wrote before hinting at her plans for 2022 with a confident end to the statement. “This new year is going to be one of the biggest years of my life,” she wrote. “My album is going to be one of the biggest female artist albums in the world, I can promise you that.”
Despite being a so-called trendsetter, Leray has continued to deal with online harassment in 2022. Recently, she was compared to fellow female rapper DeJ Loaf on Twitter and quickly pushed back at these comparisons. On January 19, the 24-year-old responded to a Twitter user who compared her style and flow to the Detroit native. “Maybe it’s the tomboy stud vibe we have in common.., but we do not sound alike,” she wrote in part. “From ‘No More Parties’ to ‘Big Prrdd’ and ‘Twinnem’ n-gga you cannot tell me we sound alike.”
Leray began posting music to SoundCloud, releasing her breakout single “Huddy” and her debut mixtape Everythingcoz in 2018. After signing a record deal with 1801 Records and Republic Records, she released her second mixtape, EC2, in 2019, and her debut extended play, Now or Never, in 2020.
In 2021, her single “No More Parties” gave Leray her first Billboard Hot 100 entry after peaking in the top 40 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In September 2021, she released the single “Twinnem” with a music video for the song. The song went viral on TikTok, and a remix of the song featuring DaBaby was released in November 2021. Also in September, she began touring as an opening act for Lil Baby’s The Back Outside Tour alongside Lil Durk.
Coi Leray was featured on Lonr’s song “Cuffin” from his mixtape Land of Nothing Real 2 in October 2021. At the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards, she was nominated for Best New Hip Hop Artist. She appeared as a featured artist on French Montana’s song “Push Start” from his upcoming studio album They Got Amnesia in November 2021.
Coi Leray’s debut album, Coi, is set to be released in later this year.
